What Are Swirl Marks?
Swirl marks are fine micro-scratches in the top layer of your car's clear coat. They appear as circular or web-like patterns, most visible in direct sunlight or under artificial light at an angle. They're not in the paint itself — they're in the protective clear coat layer on top.
The circular pattern comes from the rotational motion that causes them — automatic car washes, circular hand washing motions, and dirty cloths wiped across the paint.
What Causes Swirl Marks on Perth Cars?
- Automatic car washes — the brushes and rollers are the single biggest source of swirl marks. Even "touchless" washes use high-pressure water that can drive grit across the paint
- Dirty wash mitts or cloths — washing with a mitt that has picked up grit from the paint or ground drags abrasive particles across the clear coat
- Drying with the wrong cloth — a bath towel, old t-shirt or synthetic chamois will scratch the clear coat. Only microfibre towels should touch the paint
- Drive-through dusters — the long-handled feather or microfibre dusters used to flick dust off. If there's any grit on the surface, they scratch it in
- Perth's fine red dust — our easterly winds deposit fine abrasive particles on paint that, when wiped dry, act like very fine sandpaper
Check your car now: On a sunny day, stand at the front of your car and look along the bonnet toward the sun. If you see a web of fine circular marks — those are swirl marks in your clear coat. The more severe they are, the more stages of correction are needed.
Can Swirl Marks Be Removed?
Yes — in almost all cases, swirl marks can be fully removed by a professional using a machine polisher. The process involves using an abrasive compound to remove a microscopic amount of the clear coat, levelling the surface and eliminating the scratches in the process.
The key factors are:
- How deep the swirl marks are — light swirls need one stage of polishing, deeper marks need two or three
- How thick the remaining clear coat is — older cars that have been polished many times may have limited clear coat remaining
- The colour of the car — dark colours (black, dark blue, dark grey) show swirls more severely and require more careful correction
Can You Remove Swirl Marks Yourself?
There are DIY swirl remover products available — these are very mild abrasive polishes that can reduce the appearance of light swirl marks. However:
- They rarely fully remove swirls — they fill them temporarily with polymer fillers that wash away over time
- Applied incorrectly (wrong pad, too much pressure, wrong speed) they can add more scratches
- Without a machine polisher, hand application produces inconsistent results
- You can't see what you're doing accurately without proper lighting
For genuine, lasting swirl removal — machine polishing by a professional is the right approach.
How We Remove Swirl Marks
Our paint correction process uses a dual-action (DA) machine polisher with specific pad and compound combinations:
- Stage 1 — cutting compound on a cutting pad removes the majority of swirl marks and oxidation
- Stage 2 — polishing compound on a softer pad refines the surface, removing any marks left by stage 1
- Stage 3 — finishing polish on a finishing pad brings the paint to a high-gloss, swirl-free finish
After correction, we always recommend applying a ceramic coating or sealant to protect the freshly corrected paint and prevent swirls from returning as quickly.
How to Prevent Swirl Marks Coming Back
- Use the two-bucket wash method — one bucket for clean soapy water, one for rinsing the mitt
- Only use high-quality microfibre wash mitts and drying towels
- Never dry-wipe the paint — always rinse dust off first
- Avoid automatic car washes — hand wash or use a professional touchless wash
- Apply ceramic coating — the harder surface is more resistant to swirl formation
